RV Slide Out Operation and Troubleshooting

The 4-wheel Tote-N-Stor is by far a better option than a 2-wheeled RV tote tank since you don’t have to lift up one end to move it and it can be dumped in the horizontal position. While the Tote-N-Store is less expensive than the Barker 4-Wheel Tote-Along , the Barker is an overall better choice as its superior wheels allow you to maneuver the tote on all types of surfaces – not just hard, smooth roads. There have been some consumer reviews indicating that the front wheels of the 4-wheel Tote-N-Stor are not very durable and can come off. These front wheels are just small diameter, hard rubber caster wheels that are suitable only for smooth hard surfaces so it is easy to see that if you take this portable blackwater tank ‘off road’ these small wheels may have issues. The Tote-N-Store is a MUCH better choice than a 2-wheeled tote which you have to lift one end to move and dump , but you need to be certain that you ever need to take the tote onto a soft surface. If you do, go with the Barker and make your life easier. Tote-N-Stor Features and Specs: Available in the following gallon sizes:

21 Questions Everyone Asks Us About Living in an RV

No comments You decided to purchase a recreational vehicle for any number of reasons: You want to simplify or downsize your life. You want to travel more and work less. You want to save money. Whatever the reason, you are fully on board with living the stationary life of a full-time resident of an RV park and are excited about the possibilities that lie before you.

Our RV camp sites feature pull-thru and back-in sites with full hookups of either 30 &/or amp electric service. Hookups provide increased comfort, including the ability to use unlimited water and run items that draw a great deal of power such as televisions and air conditioners.

In entry level RVs though, the water heater may only operate in LP gas mode. Water heaters in other motorhomes might operate by a third heating method called Motoraid see more below , which uses waste heat from the motorhome engine to heat the water as you drive. Finally, some high end RVs may have an entirely different system in which the water heater is part of a diesel and electric central heating system, typically either the Aquahot or Hydrohot brand names. These systems are an entirely different animal and will not be discussed here.

A few models are advertised as being 16 gallon heaters, but these are actually 10 gallon heaters that superheat the water and then mix cold water at the outlet, making them roughly equivalent to having a 16 gallon heater at the usual degrees. The RV water heater can be operated in either mode or both can be used to speed up the heating process.

Both are controlled by a thermostat, so the heater only runs as needed. In LP gas mode, a heater control circuit board insures safe operation, so 12v power is needed for it to operate. Most water heaters have separate thermostats for Electric and LP Gas modes and the two modes are pretty much independent of each other. It requires a fairly substantial amount of electricity, about 12 amps watts , so you may not want to utilize it if power is limited, or if you want to run other high power appliances like an air conditioner or microwave oven at the same time.

This is primarily a concern in RVs that have only 30A shore power wiring, or anytime the RV is plugged into an outlet that has 30A or less available. You can switch it off temporarily the water will stay hot for some time or change over to LP Gas mode.

Legally Living in Tiny Houses: Can You Actually Live Tiny?

Jumping into living in an RV brings on a ton of questions. Most of them are pretty basic, like, where do you dump your poop? That one is easy to answer, we actually hired a guy to follow us around and he manually dumps our poop once a day.

As newbies we had no idea how to connect an RV to full hookups at a campsite. After years on the road, we know what works and whats needed.

If there is no response when you operate the slide out switch, check for blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker. There two basic types of RV slide out systems, hydraulic and mechanical. Hydraulic RV slide out mechanisms use a motor-driven hydraulic pump to actuate a hydraulic ram which pushes out or pulls in the slide out. The direction is controlled by a combination of valves. In addition to electrical problems outlined above, hydraulic slides can fail due to low hydraulic fluid level, fluid leaks and defective valves.

There are two basic types of mechanical RV slide out systems, screw-jack and rack and pinion. Rack and Pinion RV Slide Out System Rack and pinion slide out system manufacturers use different configurations but the graphic shows generally how they work. In addition to electrical problems, mechanical slide out systems will fail due to broken shear pins, gears and clutches.

Shares Travel dates: June , My post about all the stuff we did in Yellowstone while we were staying at Fishing Bridge Two days before we were due to arrive at Fishing Bridge RV Park in Yellowstone, I had something approaching a panic attack about it and spent an evening reading terrifying reviews online, becoming more and more convinced we were going to be completely miserable there, and making Dave call every other campground we could think of to see if we could get a last minute reservation.

So we bravely made our way to Fishing Bridge with bated breath and…. I want a generator so we can stay wherever we want. The roads are full of potholes and will destroy your RV: One review I read said the TV in their RV came out of the wall because of the roughness of the roads. That did not happen to us. We drove slowly and watched where we were going, and it was fine.

Collectively we think consideration of these items will not only assure greater satisfaction among RVer guests, but will also have a positive impact on the success of the RV parks which will have a “high score” on these items. Back in the swe encouraged all RV parks to be “modem friendly” — making sure guests had access to a phone line in a convenient location to check their email.

But with changing times, “modem friendly” has become a symbol associated more with “horse and buggy”.

Most RV parks provide either partial hookups, which include electricity and water, or full hookups, which add sewer service.

They are open for lunch from and for dinner from 5pm to 10pm. There are daily specials and a buffet served on Sundays.

We both ordered the BBQ chicken special which came with rice and collard greens. All cooked just right and oh so good.

Again, no offense meant at all, but this is something we have been struggling with. At least half of the folks living in mobile parks where we live use the require lots of social services my husband works in this field , hence his concern… Thanks for your thoughts and best of luck.. The current house is in a very nice, quite neighborhood, or neighbor and the guy next to him both drive truck they are parked outside often.

The one we were in was really nice, we were on the outside of the park, think there were police out there once on a domestic disturbance. Same with the park my grandmother lived in for years. You see, we had tickets for the Lollapalooza music festival and we knew camping an hour away from the concert would prove to be a royal pain in the butt. The best option I came up with was a KOA in Union, IL that was only a short drive to the public transportation which would then take approximately an hour by train to get to Grant Park. The spot turned out to be sooo perfect we decided to stay 5 more days to Bike Chicago where we explored by using the DIVVY city bike program.

In the 10 days we were in Chicago we only drove our car twice: Once to the nearby Whole Foods to stock up on groceries and another time to a couple of the local breweries not easily accessible by bike or public transportation. Amenities — This is dry camping, or boondocking if you prefer, so there is no electricity, no sewer and no fresh water.

In fact the nearest dump station we found was a Travel Center about 35 miles away. We survived for 10 days no problem with our RV Solar Setup in the Excursion and we used approximately 80 gallons of freshwater thanks to all of our Wild Camping Gadgets and Gear. The parking lot can fill up if there is a trade show, or an event, at the convention center.

The 18th street lot will be rented out for events at Soldier Field, during our visit the Bears played and we were required to move to the 31st street location. There is a small reservation fee. It was fairly breezy and it did rain part of two of the days we visited.

Most RVs have a black tank, one or two gray tanks and a freshwater tank. But holding tanks present mystery and perhaps even a bit of confusion to a new RVer. What, when, how…read on for answers. The water is pumped to your plumbing system via a volt water pump — usually operated by a switch in the kitchen or bathroom. The most common freshwater tank maintenance task is sanitization. Remember, this is simply a tank full of water — infrequent use can cause bacteria buildup resulting in bad tasting or smelling water or even a bug that may make you ill.

Eliminate this unpleasantness by sanitizing with a bleach water solution. Let stand for four to six hours. Drain the tank including hot water tank via faucets completely. Open all faucets to allow the fresh water to pump throughout the system — this step removes the bleach odor. Drain tank once again and refill — ready to use. Even sanitized, it is a good idea to use bottled water for drinking and cooking. One more fresh water tank tip — water weighs eight pounds per gallon — factor that weight in when traveling.
